Houston Doulas
As part of the South Houston Doula Cooperative, I (and my fellow doulas) coordinate Red Tent Birth Story nights around Houston. At the beginning of these events, we share a short introduction. It goes something like this:
Storytelling is an ancient ritual with tremendous power and value in society. It is the oldest form of sharing wisdom and educating generations. It is the most ancient form of woman to woman wisdom, and it is powerful.
The more we tell our stories the more we know the oral history of our lives and those who came before us. Storytelling has the power to heal and transform our lives on a profound level. You might hear of birth experiences that you want for yourself, you might hear birth experiences that you want to avoid. You might be brought to tears, or laughter, as you share or listen.
It is crucial to tell our birth stories, celebrate the happy ones, heal from the unhappy ones, and unite as a community to create the best births possible for mothers. Telling birth stories can be a very powerful way to process birth as well as a way to get to know how mothers in our community are birthing.
As an ancient African proverb states, "Being pregnant and giving birth are like crossing a narrow bridge. People can accompany you to the bridge. They can greet you on the other side. But you must walk that bridge alone.”
I began thinking, between the red tents that we promote in the Houston area, and the power of our birth stories, it would be so powerful for the doulas of Houston to share their own birth stories for the women that we serve to know us as intimately as we get to know them.
For that reason, I decided to create the "Houston Doulas, Birthing" series.
To find out how the doulas of Houston give birth, follow me over to Sage Beginnings and start reading! Expect to continue seeing Houston Doula Birth Stories on Sage Beginnings throughout November and December.
