Have They Created a Formula Close to Breastmilk?

Some of you mentioned your frustration at the term 'natural' in the last formula post...

That got me to thinking: how many times have we heard of a new formula 'formula' that has been manufactured, only to hear them say that it is the new closest thing to breastmilk.

Which, in actuality, it is 2nd best (breast being best), but still completely misses the mark. As a result, a truer statement would be 'closest to breastmilk but still not even close'.

Now don't get me wrong, I am so glad that there is an alternative when it is needed... but again, just like in obstetrics, it is the overuse and misuse of a man-made invention that tries to improve upon nature and, ultimately does more harm than good that has me up in arms.

An example is DHA/ARA being added to formula to make it even closer to breastmilk than ever before. Now women who feel guilty because of the huge push for breastfeeding all across the U.S. and within health agencies can feel less guilty for choosing the bottle over the breast because it is even closer than ever before to breastmilk... Now it has DHA and ARA.

Martek Biosciences Corporation is the pharmacuetical company that has patented a process to create both DHA and ARA in the laboratory setting.

The problem is that the laboratory products are not the same as the naturally occurring products in human milk. In fact, the DHA that is added to formula is actually DHASCO (docosahexaenoic acid single cell oil), and the ARA is actually ARASCO (arachidonic acid single cell oil). They are structurally different from the DHA and ARA that a breastfeeding infant receives.

DHASCO is created from algae grown in tightly controlled fermentation conditions in a solution of glucose and yeast. Then the oil is extracted using hexame, a toxic petroleum by-product that has been associated with disorders of the central nervous system. The hexane is then removed. What remains is only about 40-50% DHA in a dilution of sunflower oil.

ARASCO is extracted from soil fungus using a similar process. According the Martek documents hexane is used in the processing of ARASCO as well. - Glenni Lorick, IBCLC

What does this mean for the formula that we are feeding our babies?

Well the formula companies are quick to tell you that, as stated before, this means that we are 'closer to breastmilk' than ever before, but studies are not conclusive that this synthetic DHA/ARA makes a lick of difference in neurodevelopment... In fact, it is such a new thing, and controlled research is not complete on it, I am not quite sure why someone would give their child something without knowing the long-term effects of it yet.

FDA views any evaluation of the safety of use of new food ingredients such as DHASCO and ARASCO as a time-dependent judgment that is based on general scientific knowledge as well as specific data and information about the ingredient. Therefore, scientific data that become available after specific products containing a new ingredient enter the market must be considered as a part of the totality of information about the ingredient. Pre-market clinical studies evaluating the effects of infant formulas containing DHASCO and ARASCO on physical growth and some aspects of development are short-term studies, while some studies suggest that feeding of infant formulas with oils containing DHA and ARA to infants may have long-term effects on growth and development. For all these reasons, manufacturers have been asked to closely monitor these new infant formulas in the marketplace. - Keep Kids Healthy LLC

Nevertheless, ongoing research fails to show a significant beneficial effect. In early documents marketing their DHASCO and ARASCO to the formula companies, they claimed that even if these additives didn't make a difference, they could be "widely incorporated into infant formulas, as a marketing tool...."- Quoted in International Baby Food Action Network (2004) Breaking the rules, stretching the rules 2004: evidence of violations of the international code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes and subsequent resolutions

How are babies reacting? There have been reports of babies being unable to tolerate formulas with these synthetic additives to them, the most common complaint is diarrhea and even dehydration in some cases.

INFACT set out a report on this information:

Common ingredient in infant formula was found to be linked to diarrhea, severe dehydration and seizures in babies, according to complaints submitted to the FDA.

A shocking report has been released on the adverse health effects of fatty acids found in infant formulas. The Cornucopia Institute, a US-based corporate watchdog group, presented their findings on the fatty acids DHA and ARA, which are now commonly added to formula.

The report is based on a Freedom of Information Act request that the Cornucopia Institute filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the result of which was the uncovering of 98 reports filed by parents and physicians detailing incidences when babies had reacted adversely to formula containing DHA/ARA. The reported incidences range from cases of vomiting and diarrhea that stopped when babies switched to non-DHA/ARA formula to babies being treated in intensive care units for severe dehydration and seizures.

The FDA has never been convinced of the safety of DHA/ARA additives, according to the report. In its initial analysis of the additives, the FDA stated it had reached no determination on their safety status. The administration also noted that some studies had reported unexpected deaths among infants who had been fed with DHA/ARA formula. Despite its reservations, inexplicably the FDA did not withhold approval for the additives.

INFACT Canada has long questioned the use of DHA and ARA (also marketed as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) in infant formula. All major formula companies have added the fatty acids to their products in recent years, claiming that they aid in brain and eye development. However most test results have found the additives have negligible effects on infant development. But because DHA and ARA are found naturally in breastmilk, formula companies market DHA/ARA formula as ‘closer to breastmilk.’

Martek Biosciences Corporation, the company that supplies almost all formula companies with DHA/ARA, has admitted that the purpose of the additives is not to encourage healthy development, but to be used as a marketing tool. In its promotional material to encourage investment, Martek stated:

‘Infant formula is currently a commodity market, with all products being almost identical and marketers competing intensely to differentiate their product. Even if [DHA/ARA] has no benefit, we think it would be widely incorporated into formulas, as a marketing tool and to allow companies to promote their formula as ‘closest to human milk.”

While DHA and ARA are found naturally in breast milk, the idea that Martek’s manufactured acids make formula closer to breast milk is ridiculous. Martek produces DHA and ARA from fermented algae and fungus, and uses hexane (a neurotoxin) in the manufacturing process. Simply adding these synthetic substances to formula cannot make artificial baby milk behave like breast milk, which is a complex, living substance that provides babies with the best possible nutrition and immunological protection.

Regular infant formula puts babies’ health at risk, but now infants are being harmed for the sake of a marketing tool. This is an egregious case of formula companies putting profit margins above infant health. In light of this report, it is imperative that all parents be made aware of the potential risks of feeding their babies formula with DHA/ARA. The products should be pulled from the market until their safety can be properly assessed by independent investigations.

Babies should not have to get sick just because companies want to raise their sales figures.

Unfortunately, though this information is readily available to anyone who actually seeks it, the women who need to know it most will probably never hear it.. the formula companies, of course, won't offer this information, and (love mine) pediatricians by-and-large won't offer this information either because of marketing and promotions set forth by these same companies soliticiting to medical offices.

Oh that women would, majority, breast feed their babies. Oh that we, as parents, would be given all of the information so that we could make true and informed choices for our health and that of our children. Oh that it would not be about the profit margins of big companies and more about the long-term health of human beings.... In a perfect world, eh?

Enfamil and Rest-Full

Well, they did it again... the pharm reps have came up with something that should worry parent's of babies.

Enfamil Rest-Full states:

Your baby needs a proper amount of sleep to keep her healthy and happy. That's why we created new Enfamil RestFull, the formula specially designed to naturally encourage a good night's sleep.

  • A natural way to help keep your baby feeling satisfied.
  • Thickens gently in baby's tummy and digests slowly.
Ei Ei Ei!

Let's think about this - what do you know that 'naturally' thickens in your stomach to make you feel fuller longer? There is nothing natural about that. Sounds to me like some of the diet formulas and diet bars that thicken in your stomach to keep you 'fuller longer'

Do the 'experts' at Mead Johnson even care that:
I can't blame the pharm/formula companies entirely - they are only responding to what we, as a culture, and individually, many women, want: something easier on the parent, not whats best for baby.

Alterna-Mommy in Celebrity News

Ok - so, which of my readers watched Blossom in the 90's? I know I am guilty of it!

Which is why I was SO PSYCHED (yes, I did just type that) to read this article! Not only does she now tout a doctorate, but she is also an unconventional mom... And, by unconventional I don't mean nanny, personal trainer, reiki, feng shui celebrity mom - which is also unconventional.

What I mean by unconventional is anti-vaxing, co-sleeping, home birthing, ECing parenting!

All I can say is "Whoa!" (think Joey)

What Cochrane Says About Group B Strep

The Cochrane Collaboration recently published a study on Intrapartum antibiotics for known maternal Group B Streptococcal colonization.

This review finds that giving antibiotics is not supported by conclusive evidence. The review identified four trials involving 852 GBS positive women. Three trials, which were around 20 years old, compared ampicillin or penicillin to no treatment and found no clear differences in newborn deaths although the occurrence of early GBS infection in the newborn was reduced with antibiotics.

This means that the ACOG is, once again, found to be not practicing evidence-based medicine.

Oh that the medical community would trust women to make sound, personal, fully educated decisions regarding their own health care and that of their children. Give us the true facts and let us make our own choices people!

What Everyone But You Sees About Your Body

Glamour had a surprising article that is making headlines on the internet.

The amazing things about this article:
  • it is a self-esteem article
  • it features advice from a midwife
  • it features a picture of a 'plus sized' model
Because it has gotten such a strong response from women everywhere, they completed a follow-up article on Lizzi Miller, the 20 year old model featured in the original article.

It floors me, and makes me hopeful, that a mainstream magazine published such a non-conforming article and picture!

Other sites that I love to refer women to when talking about positive self-image are Shape of a Mother and the Real Beauty Campaign.

What a glorious world it would be where we can raise daughters who are proud of their real bodies, healthy bodies, honest and unaltered bodies!

I mean, I know it is a farce, just a parody, but this is a somewhat silly but serious look at what we are teaching our children with how we act about ourselves.

After reading up on this, I had a huge desire to walk my gals into the bathroom, look in the mirror with them, and tell them all the beauty (inside and out) of them!

And then, because you know how much I love Youtube, check out these beautiful 'skins':

Is Your Hospital Baby-Friendly?

I would like to think that all U.S. hospitals would want to be Baby-Friendly, but I guess that is like saying I would like to think that it is important to U.S. hospitals to strive to be woman-friendly (sigh).

I think most of you know about the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, if not, check out their website as you can help to educate the public of more baby-friendly options in your area.

While you are there, check out their list of (now-83) U.S. hospitals that are certified by BFHI!

So, what makes a hospital Baby-Friendly?

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for lactation. The BFHI assists hospitals in giving breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so.
If you search the list of hospitals and fail to see a hospital that you believe should be listed, check out their link for hospitals and facilities to find out how you might be able to encourage your area-hospital to apply. It would be phenomenal to have at least 1 hospital in every state listed, giving families more options for early- and healthy- starts.

Finally, before you leave their site, consider taking their Mom Survey, if you birthed in a hospital, and drop it off to them. I am highly considering printing these and keeping them in my doula bag for when I attend births or teach classes... I can give one to each new mom/pregnant mom to not only spread the word to families regarding their right to a better standard of care, but also to send the message to local hospitals that families are becoming more conscious of those choices and want to see change.

There is a time for everything...

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven
:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. - Ecclesiastes 3:1-13

Grandma-Great stepped from this side of the veil to the eternal yesterday evening. A beautiful woman was welcomed into eternity. Though we are selfishly sad, we are also so joyful that her pain is gone, her body is renewed, and she is reuniting with loved ones that have stepped on before her.

97 fulfilling years, we love you Grandma-great, and will miss you as you embark on this next, great adventure.

Birth Wars and Eating Out

Sheridan, one on my list of weekly reads, posted a beautifully frightening and outrageously possible analogy between birth wars and restaurant wars. Just in case you missed it, I think it is a must-read for anyone active in birth rights. She writes this in response to the recent 'homebirth movement' and subsequent response from ACOG and other, less main-stream birth professionals like Jennifer Block.

You may think it absurd, but so do I think it is absurd that there are organizations out there that are trying to take my choice of where to birth away...

Belly-rinas!

So, out of the blue, this email pops into my inbox; she had found my post on the blessingway giveaways with the belly soaps.

"I just found your post of the pregnant-belly-shaped soaps, and I had to write. A couple years ago I was pregnant with twins (which I didn't realize until they were born - at home!) For my doula of all three of my births I wanted to home make a gift from my ceramic clay, but didn't know quite what to make.

I had recently learned to make ceramic whistles, so she suggested she could use a whistle during her birthing classes (she'll blow it to get the couple to pose and practice birthing positions.) So I made her a whistle in the profile and shape of a pregnant woman...the belly and breasts, and butt :)

Two years later, as I'm finally getting back into my clay (two little ones plus two more slightly older ones can wear one out!) the same doula/friend tells me that she brought her whistle to Australia to a doula workshop there, and the doulas loved it and if I could make more she had orders placed....! I was thrilled!

So I decided to also try making ocarinas (vessel flutes, easy to play) in the same shape, and with a hole so you could wear it around your neck like a pendant. The woman liked these, as well.

So now I am hopefully at a place where maybe I can start making some money by combining two of my passions: woman/birthing/pregnancy, etc and ceramic instruments. So the story of the belly soaps was very inspiring to me :)

Thanks, Debbie"

I just think they are so darned cute!

The Experience of Birth

A video from a fellow Doula

5 generations

This is a 5 generation photo of my mom's side of the family. This photo was taken 2 months ago right after my great-grandma's 97th birthday at a family reunion.

Funny thing: all of my children were born naturally, as were my mom's, 3 of my grandma's 4, and my great-grandma's 9.

I have been blessed to know this great-grandparent. She is getting ready to leave this world. It's strange that I am not truly sad to think that her time is close, simply anticipating and peaceful. She is ready, so ready, to go 'home'. And I am so ready for her to be done suffering in her body that is failing her.

Rixa's recent post, then, came very timely and it got me to thinking. Birth and death, the only two guarantees in life. And, just like birth, my grandma-great is meeting death surrounded by family, dependent on love and necessities - and peaceful. I pray my 'time' is the same.

I love you grandma-great.

Watching Birth Pt. 2

On the near-heels of my previous post, here is a collection of videos I recently found online that all have something unique to offer educationally.

A super-multipara has her 8th baby, first unmedicated birth ... showing its never too late to have a natural birth.

A woman is surrounded by her family, gives birth at home.

Homebirth on a budget, getting creative :)

This is an awesome birth showing a strong close-up of crowning and external fetal rotation, not to mention a supportive birth team with an absolute hands-off approach, followed up by a breech birth (twins)

Labor in a pool, birth in a shallow tub. Great example of dive and resurface for pain management... something many physical therapists use in water therapy.

Beautiful example of squatting to birth, following bodies cue to push, external fetal rotation, and a nuchal hand.
